Dear Editor, I am one of those people who know that the
theory of evolution is correct. The science community is not wasting resources
to, yet again, prove the long accepted and confirmed theory of evolution, it is
now researching details of the evolutionary process to gain a global
understanding of nature. Research grants given for this purpose reflect the
country's interest to advance human knowledge and further applications of
biology in the field of medicine. Evolution and the understanding of underlying
genetic processes is of utmost importance for finding cures for bacterial and
viral diseases and late stage cancer (which is the unwanted evolution of
cancerous cells in a tumor under the selective pressure of known cancer drugs).
Should you ever have to undergo treatment for any of these, which I sincerely
hope you won't, you might want to remember that without two centuries of
biological research into evolution there would be no or only marginal medical
means available to help you.
Scientific results are, maybe contrary to common belief, not separable from each
other. Any society which wants to reap the fruit of advanced knowledge has to
accept all of it, including evolution, even if it seems to contradict religious
beliefs.
The current controversy between the theory of evolution and
literal readings of the Bible stems from a theological misunderstanding, not
flawed science. The Bible is not a replacement for a modern science textbook. It
reflects the scientific understanding of its authors. When they wrote the Bible
under the guidance of God, he gave them the knowledge appropriate for their
time, not all possible knowledge. This notion does not degrade the moral value
of the Bible and still allows the recognition of science for what it is: a
worthwhile pursuit of knowledge to help mankind. Could God be unhappy with that?
