Daily Citizen staff reports

The best efforts of at least 20 firefighters and four trucks were not enough to save the Searcy Fire Department on 301 W. Race St. Thursday night.

The frame stands. The rest is gone.

The fire is believed to have started about 6:20 in the northeast corner of the second floor, where the probation department is, said Lt. Tim Webb, public information officer for the department. The cause was unknown last night, he said.

Four square blocks around the station - Race, Arch and Gum streets - were closed as firefighters worked in teams, initially with foam and then with water.

Their best efforts could not save the fire station. By 7:45 p.m. the roof and most of the second floor were gone, and what was left of the the building was a shell.
