John Bobbitt 1762 - 1829

       We do not know when John Bobbitt died. His name does not appear in any records after 1827. Because of various family moves to other locations we believe that John died in 1828 or 1829. His wife survived him & lived with a married daughter in Moore Co., NC

       In the census record of 1820 in Moore Co. we know that the male 26 to 45 is Green Bobbitt son of John & Mary Bobbitt. Green was living with his father after his marriage in 1813. Barbara (Finch) Bobbitt wife of Green Bobbitt & their two daughters were living in the same household. The daughters were Matilda Bobbitt born in 1814 & Malissa Bobbitt born ib 1817. The male 10 to 16 we think is James W. Bobbitt born in 1804 & a grandson of John & Mary.

       It is difficult to know how many children John & Mary (Hazelwood) Bobbitt had who lived to maturity. We think that most of their children were daughters. The following is the best list we were able to make from the records.

       A study of census records fails to identify other members of this family. We are certain that there were other children, but doubt that they were born after 1800.

       Children of John & Mary Bobbitt migrated to TN, KY, IL, AL & AR. after the death of John in Moore Co., NC.

Bobbitt Family records

       There are few positive records that members of our Bobbitt families lived in Arkansas before 1845. The census of 1850 Powell TWP, Craighead Co., (then Greene Co, AR, & 1860 Big Creek TWP, Craighead Co., (formerly Greene Co., AR, lists only two families which might be part of our family history. Lydia Bobbett with a large family in Poinsett Co., & likely the widow of Simpson Bobbitt of Maury Co., TN.
       The other family was a Lewis Bobbett, Son of Solomon Bobbitt,  living in Union County.   p. 600,  655, 784, 808 Bobbitt Book

       For some reason, Arkansas had several families of New England "Bobbitt" origin. Bobbitt families which are part of our family history lived in Greene County. Poinsett Co. was formed from Greene Co. in 1838
Note: Parts of Greene Co. & Craighead Co. were once part of Poinsett Co. where the Bobbitt's originally settled.

       We have very little information about the family of Simpson Bobbitt. He was born in NC & we believe that he was a son of John & Mary (Hazelwood) Bobbitt. He was born in 1788 & is listed only in the 1830 census records of Maury Co., TN.

       We believe that Simpson Bobbitt & his wife left TN about 1837 & shortly thereafter Simpson Bobbitt either died or was killed. His wife  Lydia Bobbitt was counted in the Poinsett Co. census of 1840.
Thier son Edward was counted in the 1838 Census.

       Simpson Bobbitt was born in 1788 in Moore Co., VA or Sampson Co., NC, his wife was born in 1790 in AL, married in 1814, not unusual for women of this time, and their first child son Edward G. Bobbitt born in 1815 was on the 1839 Census for Poinsett Co.  By 1840 some of the girls & a son were married & away from home. In any event we think that the three families listed in the 1850 census of Greene Co., AR are descendants of Simpson & Lydia Bobbitt.

       There is more work than theory to our conclusion. We have searched all the records & cannot find any Bobbitt families which will account for these families in Greene Co.. Futhermore these families & their descendants live in this county to the present time.

       John J. Bobbitt was a brother of Green W. Bobbitt of Fayette Co., TN. Who ever gave the census information about John made a mistake. John was born in NC, not KY. John J. & his brother Green W. were sons of Drury & Rebecca Bobbitt of Moore Co., NC
