1820 Census of Rutherford Co., TN

Lewis Bobbitt:
     1 male under 10   (1810-1820)                     1 female under 10   (1810-1820)
     1 male 26 - 45     (1775-1794)                     1 female 26 - 45     (1775-1794)
This is the Lewis Bobbitt born in 1794, married Disa Duke. Lewis died in 1827 and his family is in Carroll Co., TN in the 1830 Census.

471-474       Lewis Bobbitt Junior was the last son of Lewis & Elizabeth (Moore) Bobbitt. Lewis Junior had two brothers who lived to maturity. They were, William Bobbitt born in 1738 & Miles Bobbitt born in 1731. Lewis Bobbitt Junior was born in Amelia Co., VA, in that section that was formed from Prince George Co. in 1734. In 1754 that section of Amelia Co. was taken to form Prince Edward Co.

Lewis did not marry until he was about 31 years of age. In 1773 he married Mary Person, a daughter of William Person Senior. His sister, Martha Bobbitt, married William Person, Junior. The first mention of Lewis Bobbitt Junior in the records of NC was in a land deed of Bute Co., Deed Book 1, page 4, on Oct. 21, 1766.

"         "

The Person family & Bobbitt family connections are noticable in a deed recorded in Bute Co., Deed Book 3, page 84, recorded Sep. 22, 1769.

"           "

In 1770 Lewis Junior adds to his land holdings with a deed recorder in Bute Co. in Book 3, page 220.

"             "

Lewis Junior apparently took care of hid father & mother and for this reason was more favored by his father when he disposed of his personal property. In 1765, Lewis Senior had a deed recorded in Bute Co. in Will Book 1, page 36, which tells the story.

"           "

There is no indication that the two other sons of Lewis Bobbitt received any of the personal property or land of their father.

Lewis Bobbitt Junior married Mary Person. We know from a deed recorded in Bute Co., Book 6, page 177, that he was married before the year 1776.

"         "

In the 1771 Bute Co. tax list, Lewis Junior, William & Miles Bobbitt are listed as taxable with no sons over 21 years of age. The tax list shows that the three brothers were all living in the same district, near to one another.

The state census of NC taken in 1786 lists only Lewis & Miles Bobbitt Warren Co.

Lewis Bobbitt         1 male 21 - 26      5 males under 21      4   females all ages

Miles Bobbitt          2 males over 16     1 male under 16        6 females

The federal census of NC taken in 1790 lists the families of Lewis & Miles in Warren Co. The males born before 1774 are over 16 & the ,ales born after 1774 are under 16.

Lewis Bobbitt

Miles Bobbitt          2 males over 16     1 male under 16        6 females

The 1800 Census of Warren Co. lists the family of Lewis Bobbitt Junior as:

Lewis Bobbitt:
     2 males under 10   (1790-1800)    2 females under 10    (1790-1800)
     1 male 10 - 16       (1784-1790)     1 female 10 - 16       (1784-1800)
     1 male 16 - 26       (1774-1800)     1 female 45 +             (.......-1755)
     1 male 45+             (........-1755)

The census records & the recorded will of Lewis Bobbitt confirm the major events in his life. His will was recorded in Warren Co. in 1818. The sons listed in the census records & in the will were, James born in 1782, John born in 1789, Miles born in 1792, & Lewis born in 1994.

Mary Person, thge wife of Lewis Bobbitt Junior, must have been younger than Lewis by many years. She had to be born in 1750 & would have been 8 years younger. When Mary was 16 years old it would have been in 1766, and that is about the time that Lewis received his first land. There is no evidence that Lewis had any other wives. Mary Person was his only wife, & the mpthere of all of his children.

Lewis Bobbitt was listed in the Warren Co. tax lists from 1784 until 1815. Most of those years he was taxed for 300 acres of land, and no sons over 21 years of age living at home.

In the federal census of Warren Co. taken 1n 1810, Lewis & his family are listed as:

Lewis Bobbitt:
"                      "

The will of Lewis Bobbitt was written Jan. 6, 1816. It was recorded in Warren Co., Book 21, page 192. The will was probated in May of 1818. The will is here abstracted for our purposes.

"                    "

It is evident from the will that Lewis is leaving a family of young children, although all were married except Elizabeth. The will was proven in court by James & Miles Bobbitt in 1818. Lewis was 76 years of age when he died. We feel certain that his wife Mary mentioned in the deed recorded.in 1776 is the same wife named Mary that is mentioned in the will. Thomas H. Person, is likely a brother of Mary, & a brother-in-law of Lewis Bobbitt Junior.

From the James Bobbitt Bible & from the census records we have the following dates of birth for the children who lived to maturity.

James Bobbitt                    1782    p 293
John Bobbitt                      1789
Miles Bobbitt                     1792
Lewis Bobbitt                    1794    p 397
Elizabeth Bobbitt                1795
Rebecca Bobbitt                1796

Marriages for some of the children were recorded in Warren Co., NC.

James Bobbitt            Married Mary Gunn                        Feb. 10 1809
Miles Bobbitt (1)          "           Susan Gunn                       Oct 19, 1814
Miles Bobbitt (2)          "           Martha Davis                     Jan 01, 1827
Lewis Bobbitt III          "           Dicey Duke                       Oct 20, 1815
Rebecca Bobbitt           "           Hilleary Capps                   Oct 10, 1811
John Bobbitt                 "           Nancy Huse (Hughes)                     1808
Elizabeth Bobbitt          "

After the death of Lewis Bobbitt Junior, James & Lewis migrated to Rutherford Co., TN, where they joined their brother John. Miles remained in NC, as did the daughters & their families. We believe that Mary Bobbitt moved to TN to be with her sons & their families & that she died in Gibson Co.
